With its superior energy efficiency, the GT701D DSL Modem helps consumers save money on their electricity bill while protecting the environment through fewer harmful emissions from power plants. Its power adapter earned the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)'s Energy Star rating, signifying that is uses at least 30% less energy than modems with conventional power adapters. A green modem, the GT701D is also a full rate ADSL 2/2+ modem and a router, capable of networking up to 256 computers using wires. Now, users can easily share their broadband connection with other devices in their digital home.
Not so fast and easyReviewed by Judi Sierra, 2010-03-03
It probably would have been an easy 10 minute install if I had
remembered my modem password correctly.
I have AT&T DSL in the SF Bay Area and was experiencing
intermittent slow downs to 6.87 Kb/s. with a Motorola 2210. Since
an ATT tech said it's usually the modem I panicked and ordered this
due to the reviews here and supposed good tech support. (However
after I called ATT their service miraculously got better after a
line test which they informed me was fine.)
Installation turned into an hour and a half ordeal of being
directed to the AT&T password creation page which didn't work
and then told to call an automated system for the new temporary
password. Since I didn't know what to do with it once I got it, I
stayed on the line to talk with the ATT tech who couldn't figure
out how to to configure it with the Actiontec site after going
through the various menus there. He reassured me that temporary
didn't mean it was going to expire and to write it down somewhere.
I called Actiontec and that tech told me to enter the username and
password again on their modem site, but it didn't work. He then had
me try the ATTreg site which wouldn't even come up. Then he said
that's all he could do for me and to call AT&T again, it was a
temporary password and probably had expired in 30 minutes. So much
for tech support!
After hanging up I reinstalled the Motorola modem and entered the
new password at the AT&T Yahoo modem site and it worked fine! I
was getting ready to repackage the Actiontec to send it back but
decided I would reinstall it one more time entering the new
password and user name again. Finally an hour and half later, I got
it to work!
Luckily when I reconnected my Linksys Wireless G Router to the
modem, it worked without any glitches. Actiontec says clearly they
will not help you with that portion of installation.
Great Replacement for Verizon DSLReviewed by Robert A. Morgan Sr., 2010-03-02
My old Westell DSL modem was more than 10 years old. Verizon wanted to sell me a replacement for about $100. This was almost half the price. Set up was very easy. Even though I am very computer saavy, someone with little knowledge could set this up and get it working without any problems. Some really good features - Q0S, with several options and easy setup as well - something I hadn't found in other DSL modems. This does not include any wireless connectivity, so if you are looking for that, you will have to use a wireless router in conjunction with this DSL modem. I set it up with my D-Link DIR 655 N-Router and have no problems. You will have to change the IP address to either the DSL modem or the router, so that may take a little more knowledge to do this, but it is not difficult. Would Recommend this as a replacement for a Verizon DSL modem. I would also recommend replacing the CAT5 wires with CAT6. I was able to increase my speed about 5-10%.
Replaced my ATT Motorola MSTATEA (2210-02-1002)Reviewed by Home Techie, 2010-03-02
After reading the reviews, I decided on the Actiontec. So far so
good. I have only had it online for one week, but have not had one
dropped connection, whereas I had to reboot the Motorola at least
once per day. In fact, the Motorola modem never really worked well
from the start. I use the Actiontec with my D-Link DIR-655 and
there are no problems.
I did need to change the Internet settings in the DIR-655 (changed
it back to "Dynamic (DHCP)" because I was using the Motorola in
bridged mode, and hence had the D-Link router initiating the PPPoE
connection. With the Actiontec, I just let it do the PPPoE
connection as it sets it up automatically, and I could not find an
option for "bridged mode" in the admin console. Only gave it 4
stars because it is too new. Otherwise, I recommend it for anyone
looking to replace the cheap, ATT-provided modem that comes with
the service.
Too many variables that do not apply to everyoneReviewed by Clorman Borno, 2010-02-27
Like many of the reviewers, I purchased this DSL modem to replace a
very old (6+ years) Westell modem I had used with AT&T
Bellsouth. I guess when you rent an old modem long enough, AT&T
will let you just keep the modem, and some AT&T techs will
incorrectly tell you that old modem will only work with AT&T.
Not true. Still, I was getting lower bandwidth than I paid for with
my new service (having moved to another part of the country), so a
friend recommended a newer DSL modem. For $44, I figured "what the
heck".
Unfortunately, I don't think it was money well spent.
With the Westell modem, I very rarely had DSL Syn problems with
CenturyTel/CenturyLink, and if I did, I'd simply unplug the power
cord from the back of the modem, plug it back in, and 30 seconds
later, I was back in business (and at a slightly faster
speed).
Thou shalt not unplug the ActionTec modem or permanent damage may
occur. Really? What if the power goes out?
What if I move and have to put it back in it's box? Is that
disclaimer there so you can never return it?
1) Is it simple to set up? No. Not even for a Unix System
Administrator.
2) Are download speeds any faster than the 6 year-old DSL modem?
Yes, slightly.
3) Has connection reliability improved with this DSL modem? No. In
fact, DSL Sync problems occur at least once a day, requiring a
reboot through the modem's web browser-based interface.
4) Have I given up on this DSL modem? Not yet. I hope to give
ActionTec support a chance and see if there are parameters that can
be adjusted to prevent or reduce the Sync problems.
Better data speeds and easy setupReviewed by skeezix, 2010-02-12
I bought this based on user reviews. Our old Speedstream modem gave
out after 6 years of continuous use.
Setup was easy for CenturyTel (now Centurylink) DSL service. It
worked fine on the second try. Surprisingly, I get a lot faster
response now when web pages are loading. It's very much improved.
So far it works good.
You'll need to use the manual on the CD-ROM for the router
features. There's a lot to choose from in the settings - or you can
just stick with the recommended defaults.
