Same or worse speed with Comcast

Reviewed by A. Stern, 2010-03-09

I bought this modem to save the $5 monthly modem rental fee and after reading the comments here I expected a speed increase. I'm getting the same or worse download speeds and Comcast is using DOCSIS 3.0 in my area. Using [...]and choosing my local server (Philadelphia) I get about 10Mbps down and 5Mbps up. With the rented modem I was getting 20Mbps down and about 3-4Mbps up. When I choose a server in New Jersey or New York I get the same speed I was getting with the rented modem. I don't know what that means but I'm definitely not getting faster download speeds. It took me a minute to connect it but it took Comcast about 30 minutes on the phone to add it to my account and get it working. I asked to make sure DOCSIS 3.0 is being used in my area and it is but was told I wouldn't see any faster speed unless I upgrade to a faster more expensive tier of service. I'll be keeping the modem because I doubt I'll notice any speed difference in regular use. Downloading from megaupload I'm getting the same speed as the rented modem which is on average between 1-3Mbps. I give Amazon and the modem 5 stars. I give Comcast ZERO stars.

Great for Comcast

Hooked up easily. There is CD that comes with it but it only contains some documents, no installation software. The modem worked fine for about a week and then had to be exchanged because it would no longer connect to Comcast. Comcast come out and installed a new line but the modem still wouldn't connect. Amazon sent out a new one and the new one is working fine. This time I called Comcast as soon as I hooked up the modem and we haven't had any problems.

Works Great, but SoCal Charter Users BEWARE!

Reviewed by Andrey Dravinski, 2010-03-08

I have to admit, this review will often smack more of a review of SoCal's Charter Communications service than the modem itself, but the experiences I've had with it are so intertwined, I figure it should be necessary to include them and to advise future customers of potential issues they may encounter with the modem.

To begin with, the modem worked flawlessly out of the box initially. The tech came to set up my cable connection and registering the modem itself with Charter was a breeze. For about a week or so, the modem performed without issue.

1 week into use, the modem disconnected from the network and refused to "lock" back onto Charter's servers. This is where my troubles with this modem began and the reason for voicing my notice of concern for anyone who plans to use this modem with Charter's Cable service in Southern California. (Mainly the Azusa Area)

After conferring with no less than 2 techs, their collective supervisor and 3 different phone tech reps and getting nowhere, I finally said to heck with it and got an RMA for my modem and got another one which as of this writing is still functioning normally.

The major issues I've had with this modem and Charter's service are the following:

-I could not get a straight answer from Technical Support whether this Modem is actually supported. 2 of the phone techs said it's fully supported, one said it will only work with their MaxSpeed service (60 Mb/s) and not reliably connect with any other speed

-Local techs (at least in Azusa CA) have very little experience with this modem. One said he had already 5 trouble requests with this specific model (he also wanted his supervisor to open a general area trouble ticket for this modem model because of the repeated problems he was having across customers), and another had to speak to his supervisor just to activate the darn thing.

That being said, once I actually got the modem up and running it's a beast! I'm running it with Charter's 20 mb/s service and so far it's performing quite admirably. After a bit of fnagling, I managed to hook up a Linksys WRT54GL router to it and so far all is performing quite well (though the connection setup is a bit ornery to be sure).

Overall, it's definitely a solid modem, but I fear that it's relative newness on the scene and the newer DOCSIS 3.0 specification (that doesn't seem to be actually utilized at all unless you're essentially trying to run a T3 line into your house) has at least Charter here a bit off balance by the whole thing. The severe lack of consistency of knowledge regarding it and the spotty connections I had initially with it were quite frustrating and almost made me return the 2nd modem and downgrade to a previous model just to get it to work.

So in summary: it's a great modem, but if you're planning to use Charter's Cable service in the Southern California area, beware! You're going into it with almost no support from Charter as they know as much about the modem as you probably do. The inconsistent support will be a major turnoff for casual users at least for the immediate future.
